Rules for Minimum Purchase Amounts

There are specific rules about minimum purchase amounts, and not following them correctly could lead to fines for your business.


Merchants may set a minimum purchase amount of up to $10 for credit card transactions. However:

  • Debit cards are exempt — even when run as credit
  • The minimum must apply equally to all credit card brands
  • You cannot treat different cards within a brand differently
